Using a tiered approach
The National Foundation for Educational Research has recommendations for school leaders on raising disadvantaged pupils’ attainment.
Following these recommendations we focus on just 3 areas of activity as research shows this is most effective at narrowing the attainment gap.
This tiered approach combines:
- teaching (for example, staff development and training)
- targeted academic support (for example, structured interventions)
- wider strategies (for example, related to well-being, promoting attendance, art participation)

There is a strong emphasis on supporting and enhancing learning through these additional activities.
